Omnipresent Chaos
Zach Gough
September 8 - 17
The season begins with sculpture and paintings exploring the contrasting ideals of classical beauty through the models of the Greek gods Apollo and Dionysus. The Greeks believed that these two gods represented opposite characteristics of the individual; Apollo rationality, perfection, self control and order; Dionysus intoxication, ecstasy, pain, dance, celebration and the plurality of existence.
From these two models Zach will portray the figure through sculpture and painting. Discarded metal scraps will be welded together to depict figures in uncomfortable poses that suggest internal ecstasy and strife simultaneously, representing the Dionysian aspect. For the Apollonian aspect, Zach will create life-sized portraits, realistically rendered, depicting comfortable, composed and idealized figures.
A closing reception will take place on September 15 as part of a gallery crawl between the Owens Art Gallery, Fog Forest, and Struts, starting at 7pm at the Owens. Zach's show is scheduled to open at 8:30pm. |

The Disposable Masterpiece
Ben Allain, Chris Friel, and Shamus Griffith
September 22 - 30
The Disposable Masterpiece is an art making collective comprising of Ben, Chris and Shamus, who have been collaborating on drawings that explore communication of concepts without the use of language. In the past couple of months, the three artists have created over 200 drawings collectively through a process that they feel allows them to add conceptual depths to their work that would otherwise be unachievable.
For the show, the artists will display a large amount of their own work, but this will not be the focus of the exhibition. The main intent of the show will be to expand their collaborative process by inviting audience members to interact through drawing. A table will be set up in the space for audience members to work on drawings, add to existing drawings, create new drawings, and work together in a limitless variety of manners. Everyone is encouraged to come down and participate. |

Moorea Hum
October 13 - 20
Moorea will be displaying a body of lithographic and silk screen prints that build a a narrative about an imaginary place, with its own language, people and environment. This fictional world is flooded with yellow mists, vacant spaces, and is occupied by beings that are half-bird, half-human, who communicate through their own language that we do not understand but can recognize as a language.
The main theme of this work will be individual interpretation, as the prints will present a narrative that can be read in many different ways by the viewer. They are encouraged by the artist to create their own ideas of what happens in this other world, and by doing so make this fantasy place their own.
Opening Reception Friday October 13th, 8:00pm. All welcome! After party at Ducky's, followed by Porch Club. |

Ali Turner
November 17 - 25
For Ali's show Start will be filled with pattern and touchable fabulousness! In addition to silkscreening patterns directing onto the white walls of the space, the artist will display six to eight paintings and silk screened fabrics. Some canvases will be pattern for the sake of beautiful pattern, while others will be overlaid with portraits of important women in her life. Many of these women are the inspiration for Ali's appreciation of textiles, making it a suitable medium for these portraits.
One of the main appeals of fabric is its feel, so all viewers will be encouraged to touch the paintings in this show. |

Lynn Misner
December 1 - 9
All of Start will be transformed into a massive full-scale installation representing the living space of someone who has been forced to leave abruptly and left many of their possessions behind. Viewers will be invited to enter an individual's private life by looking through their personal belongings; clothes are scattered on the floor, letters are left in the open to be read, furniture is left overturned. Audio and video elements will be incorporated to create animated features in the space, as well as give further insight into this unknown person's past. The piece explores identity and how personal objects reflect an individual even when not present. Perhaps the most chilling aspect of the installation is the realization that our personal belongings exist long after we are gone. |
