TALKING ARTISTS

October 25th, 2008

It is fabulous to have the opportunity to talk about art with other artists from Sackville/Moncton, Montreal/TO, Syracuse…

… formally during Symposium’s “Performing Sackville” Panel Wed. Oct 22

and informally at STRUTS whilst Pam & I

JAZZ SKAT improvise [verbally & with our bodies] a call & response performance of hanging our laundry in public.

(NB: Mount Allison art class & folks who have dropped in to STRUTS are coming Tuesday 8:30 am to re-hang our squares in New Conversations).

There were 2 very good artist talks, too.

Tom Sherman’s Keynote Address: Messages that Stick (and ways to escape the limitations of adhesion)

which was about things closing down due to prevailing Messaging Culture

and Jake Moore’s “from strand to structure”

which was about things opening up due to open source languages.

MARGINALIA WORKING IT OUT

October 8th, 2008

Hi! It is Margaret here. Pam and I are in Sackville to explore and develop MARGINALIA — a correspondence project between Pam (St. John’s Newfoundland, Atlantic Ocean, East) and me (Finn Slough BC, Pacific Ocean, West) that we began in February 2004.  We have made 3000+ 12″ X 12″ squares/carres that are windows, diaries, paintings, poems of our lives — a soft book of memories. Some squares are in the installation right GETTING OUT OF THE HOUSE at the Richmond Art Gallery in BC until November 16th.  The rest we have brought to Struts along with our email/video/audio correspondence. The plan is to make a series of studies employing video and projection with performance and silhouettes to deepen our conversation and play around topics of distance, margins, home, community, aging and sexuality.  Daily Verbs: swimming, shopping, cooking, shooting, digitizing, shadow playing, yoga practice, sorting, looking, learning, going to the gym, walking, walking, walking, talking about art, making art, and making friends …. Sackville is achingly autumnally gorgeous. The Sackville Waterfowl Park is full of walking trails, plovers, wood ducks and an awesome public art project. Tonight after we check our shadow shots that we took at the railway track,  we are hiking on the beaches. The daily combo of swimming, yoga, & walking is why we named our residency WORKING IT OUT — except with carbs. Good carbs. Like the multigrain rye and flax bread from the local bakery (see photo).  The staff at STRUTS are terrific. We are  thrilled to be here!
