Artist-in-Residence
October 10 - November 14

Graeme Patterson was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. After graduating from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2002, Graeme completed a 25 minute animation entitled Don't Ride Shopping Carts and is currently working on a new animation entitled Monkey and Deer. Graeme is also interested in sculptural/electronic installation. His most recent installation entitled Romancing the Farm was shown at the 2004 Marion McCain Atlantic Art Exhibition in Fredericton at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. He has participated in residencies at Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Museum, at the Owens Art Gallery in its Artists in the Schools Program, and will be an Open Studio artist-in-residence at Struts Gallery and Faucet Media Arts Centre. He has developed a process of creating independent stop-motion animations.

Graeme Patterson installed a new work at the Owens Art Gallery in conjunction with his residency with the Gallery's Artists in the Schools program. The exhibition is related to his recent installation Romancing the Farm, using sculpture, projected animation, sound and electronics. From the prairies, Graeme has been influenced by romantic visions of farm life and ghost towns, themes he continues and explores further in the new work. Elements of his new film Monkey and Deer are also displayed including set pieces, clips, and figures. This short animation depicts the interaction between a circus monkey and a white-tailed deer. A loose narrative follows the characters through various “Alice in Wonderland” like environments within the ghost town of Woodrow. Eventually, the monkey’s human-like sophistication succumbs to the unpredictable nature of the wilderness in which the deer is at home.
